As we know, mobile phones have many features and serivces that allow you to meet with new people and contact with your friends. While you are passing the pasta dish around the table, you could actually be secretly “meeting” people by running a Bluetooth phone application called RendezBlu. You need to set up a free account on rendezblu.com, download and install the application on your phone, set up your preferences (whether you want to gather male and/or female profiles), and start the discovery process. You then minimize the application so it runs in the background.

RendezBlu will scan its surroundings every 5 minutes for other phones also running the application. If the preferences match (for example if you’re a male looking for males it will not store a male profile only looking for females), your phone will store that profile until it is either turned off or you’ve uploaded the contact to the site. There is a counter to show you how many profiles it has stored.

Currently RendezBlu is only compatible with Symbian phones running S60 version 3 or Windows Mobile version 6.1, but there are other platforms under development. The range is about 30 feet or 10 meters. Potential uses are “furtive” dating, professional gatherings to exchange business contacts, blind dates, school classes, etc. The nice thing about it is that in a way, you’ve already “met” and since you were both in the same place at the same time, there is a good chance you also share the same interests, even if that’s just eating out at your favorite place.

For people who like to approach others directly, this is not for you, but if you feel more comfortable contacting people via email, then you should definitely give this application a try. For one thing, it’s fun and exciting to see whom you’ve “met” during a night out once you go home and log in to the site. Another advantage is that your network of contacts cannot be faked out or inflated by other artificial links. The only people you see online are the people who came within 30 ft or 10m of you with RendezBlu also running. You can always delete anyone you don’t want to be linked to without them even knowing it. Now you can look one way and have RendezBlu look the other…
